Latest System Update releases

SonicAdmin80SonicAdmin80 Cybersecurity Overlord ✭✭✭

The latest updates for NSv 6.5.4.4 branch (2340 & 2395) have been released in October and March, but there still isn't any System Update release that can be found.

The release notes say:

"For NSv deployments running a previous version of SonicOS 6.5.4.v, upgrading via the System
Update option in the NSv management console is recommended for this release. The System Update
option updates both SonicOS and SonicCore to the latest version."

But no System Update version is available. If this recommendation doesn't apply to these patches, it should be noted in the release notes. Or should I just continue to wait for months and apply them when they are available from System Update as a best practice?

Could someone from SonicWall comment on this?

    Good day.

Can you refer this document for system update NSv 6.5.4 details?

    https://www.sonicwall.com/support/technical-documentation/docs/sonicos-6-5-4-v-release_notes/Content/upgrade-information.htm

Please let us know if this helps.

That page has the same recommendation:

    • For NSv deployments running a previous version of SonicOS 6.5.4.v, upgrading via the System Update option in the NSv management console is recommended for this release. The System Update option updates both SonicOS and SonicCore to the latest version. For more information and instructions, refer to the SonicOS 6.5 NSv Series Upgrade Guide.
    • To obtain the resolution for issues with SonicCore dependency, a fresh installation or System Update is needed.

But the updates I referred to in the first post were never available through System Update. Luckily a later update since then was so I was able to update through System Update as recommended. But it seems to be hit-and-miss if update through System Update is available. So half the time the recommended update route isn't available.

Once again the latest firmware release notes say:

"For NSv deployments running a previous version of SonicOS 6.5.4.v, upgrading via the System
Update option in the NSv management console is recommended for this release."

But the firmware isn't available through System Update. System Update was never released for the two updates before the previous update in July. I even opened a support case but the techs were completely clueless about NSv updates in general. The case was open for over a month and finally the next update in July was released through System Update.

If I had to guess the release note template is copied each time and contains this boilerplate recommendation even if the update isn't available through System Update. There doesn't seem to be any way to confirm though, so one has to hope that the update goes through ok and doesn't actually contain anything that will remain unpatched if done with the SWI method.

What is implied through this deduction is that "if System Update patch is available, update using that; if System Update patch isn't available, update with SWI file and hope for the best" since there isn't any official stance from SonicWall.
