Subnets on an existing interface (x0)

We bought the SonicWall NSA 2700. We had previously configured one interface to handle all routing within the subnet 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.255, and the DHCP server was set to the same range. My question is: Can I set up our SonicWall interface (x0) with a larger subnet mask, such as /22, using the IP 192.168.0.1 and subnet mask 255.255.252.0?

Subnet Mask Change:

• Current Setup:
  • Interface IP: 192.168.0.1
  • Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 (/24)
  • DHCP Range: 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.255
• Proposed Change:
  • New Interface IP: 192.168.0.1
  • New Subnet Mask: 255.255.252.0 (/22)
  • New IP Range: 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.3.254

If so, would this allow traffic to be routed directly between computers and servers on different subnets within this range, rather than having to pass through the SonicWall router for inter-subnet traffic?"

What are necessary steps needs to check ? to do this larger network?

Yes, you can change the mask on the Sonicwall, assuming the smaller mask does not overlap other interfaces configured on the Sonicwall.

As for

different subnets within this range

they're not going to be different subnets. You can pretend that you have 4x /24s or 32x /27s but each of those networks will still have to use 192.168.0.1 as their gateway. So yes, they will talk to each other directly and will not attempt to use the Sonicwall for inter-subnet traffic.

There are no different subnets on the proposed network (assuming no other interfaces are configured as ARKWRIGHT say)- that is 1 IP subnet, one broadcast domain, no routing

Yes. You can create virtual interface (VLAN) under the X0 interface and assign the required additional subnet.
