How can I automate connecting to an end point via Global VPN Client?

I have an automation that runs in a service context. I want to be able to open the connection to the remote, perform some work and then tear it down when I am done.
I have used the command line to manage the connection state interactively, but it doesn't work in this service context.
Is this something that should work? And if so what should I be looking for to get it to work.
Absent the command line, is there some sort of API/SDK available that would let me manage a connection?

could you do below knowledge.
No. I am specifically looking to start the connection in an on-demand fashion as part of a service and tear it down the same way. We are in the process of publishing an automation toolkit where we want the user to be able to specify that a VPN connection needs to be started before a series of steps and then terminate it afterward. Having it running for the duration of the computer session is not desirable for two reasons: 1. it has the VPN open far longer than it needs to be, and 2. VPNs are either configured with specific durations or are unstable and fail so they need to be reconnected anyway.
