technically it should be possible, because you can re-sync the settings from the appliance back to NSM. I prefer to work on the appliance, because CSC/NSM can be darn slow.
But in my experience it's a desaster (so far). I wasn't able to get NSM and physical appliance in sync properly. Started all over, but did not do much changes.
