Licence transfer process
Hi
I'm just about to transfer the software licences from an old unit to its replacement that i'm installing in a couple of days time. My question is, how quickly does the transfer happen, and more importantly, is there any grace period where the licences will work on both the old and new device, or is transferring the licences the last thing to do before installing?

Hello @amcoll_77 ,
Greetings! :-)
When you say replacing a firewall, Is that a RMA replacement or Upgrading to a newer model?
If its a RMA replacement (hardware warranty replacement),
The licenses from the defective unit will be completely transferred to the replaced unit and you will not get any grace license on the defective units because the system will transfer all the license data from the defective unit to the replacement unit.
You can contact SonicWall customer service to get the licenses transferred if its RMA service transfer.
If its a upgrade ( secure upgrade promotion ),
While registering the new model the system will give u 2 options, whether you want to transfer the licenses (Register and transfer) immediately and this option will delete the old unit from you Mysonicwall account and it cannot be re-registered or used under product. And the second option is register only, under this option you get a grace period of 60 days. you can complete the setup of the new appliance and test the environment and then move the licenses to the upgraded model.
The below KB article will explain about how to resister a new secure upgrade model,
The below KB article link will explain how to transfer the licenses to the upgraded model after registration,

Thanks for the info, unfortunately, those links take me to a Salesforce page that needs a login. However, the explanation makes sense, so thank you
I am in the same process, and I ask myself the following question ... once the licenses have been transferred to the new model, can the old equipment be used as a common firewall or is it unusable?
Hi @Camilo
if you're talking about Secure Upgrade (replacing old with new unit) than you should just register the new appliance first and transfer at a later point in time, this give you time to migrate. There is an option for doing it in a 2-step process. Not sure about the time frame, it will be showed in the the process, 30 days+ if I remember correctly.

Hi @Michael
I have already registered and transferred the licenses to my new device. With that I have not had problems.
But sorry to throw away the old gear, so I was wondering if they wouldn't serve at least as a common router.
Hi @Camilo
when the appliance is registered and the services already transferred you cannot bind any services on the old appliance any longer.
Technically the old appliance will work as a router but I guess this is against the term and conditions of the Secure Upgrade.

thanks @BWC I will review the terms, I did not think of that. It's a shame to leave him as he steps on papers
